How to watch YouTube videos without ads on Invidio.usUpdate: As of September 1st 2020, invidio.us has closed down. RIP.
See no more ads or hassle just to watch a short video. Sometimes keeping it simple is best when you want to watch a video without being hassled. Actually, that’s all the time for me. I’m sick of seeing ads, annotations, sidebar recommendations, pop-ups, and whatever else popular video sharing websites like to cram in your face at the most inconvenient times.
Are you looking for a good alternative to watch YouTube videos without all the ads and crap that YouTube’s website brings with their videos? I don’t know how long this website will be up before it gets shut down by Google, but you should definitely consider checking out https://invidio.us. Yes, that is dot US for a domain suffix, also known as a top level domain such as .com or .org. There have been many newly issued top level domains over the past several years, and my website is one example with the .design domain suffix.
Take your generic YouTube video URL (web address) and just replace the YouTube.com part of the URL with Invidio.us and leave everything after the first forward slash as is. You’ll be redirected to the Invidio.us website instead and you wont have to view ads or unnecessary crap from YouTube. If you want to view ads and support your favorite YouTuber, just view the videos on YouTube instead.
Here’s how to do it.

Change it to this: https://invidio.us/watch?v=t1FGB5Uny78
Invidio.us allows you to view or even listen to YouTube videos without the ads and bloat that YouTube comes with. If you’re like me and you hardly ever log in to YouTube, you might like Invidio.us because it is just so simple and easy. What is really cool about Invidio.us is that you can download the source code yourself from Omar Roth’s Github page and create your own YouTube clone by using their application programming interface. Check out the Invidio.us GitHub page here: https://github.com/omarroth/invidious. Thanks to Omar Roth for such a cool YouTube alternative.
One thing I love about Invidio.us versus YouTube.com is the insane amount of scripts and resources that aren’t loaded when you visit Invidio.us. Look at all the ads and tracking scripts that are loaded on YouTube.com versus Invidio.us in my screenshot comparison. There is a night and day difference in the amount of scripts YouTube loads compared to Invidio.us.
Listening to audio only for a YouTube video on Invidio.us
Sometimes I like to listen to interviews or podcasts which have been uploaded to YouTube. The only bad thing is that these videos consume massive amounts of data if they are several hours long. Streaming a 3 hour long podcast video in HD just to listen to an audio interview is simply a waste of data and could blow through a couple gigabytes of data easily.
Instead, Invidio.us can pull the audio stream from a YouTube video and save you a boatload of data! On Invidio.us, there is an audio icon next to the video title. Simply click the audio icon and the audio page will refresh for that video. Then you just click the video thumbnail to play and you can also change the audio stream quality on some videos to save even more data.
Video sharing website alternatives are great and hopefully more tech-savvy people will continue to make YouTube alternatives in the future!
